Mini Medical School to focus on mental health issues of young people

Young people and their mental health will be the focus of a Mini Medical School session from 6-8 p.m. May 13 at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Free and open to the public and sponsored by the Jacobs School, the Mini Medical School series tackles important medical topics geared to a general audience. The organizers note that May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Michael S. Andragna, assistant professor of psychiatry in the Jacobs School, will speak about “The Data of Dogma of Distressed Youth: Putting a Psychiatric Crisis in Context.” He will discuss various data from the youth risk behavior survey and other sources to help attendees understand how rates of mental illness and its consequences are changing over time, and how the system is responding to it.

Jamal B. Williams, assistant professor of psychiatry, will speak about “Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Research Updates,” providing insight on the most recent findings.

The program has been providing Western New Yorkers with an inside look at the medical school experience through lectures on various health care topics since 1997.
